IFTTT stands for “If This Then That,” and it’s a web-based service that allows users to create chains of simple conditional statements, called “recipes”, which are triggered by changes to other web services.
The best part about IFTTT is the variety of channels it has–you can use it to automate everything from your thermostat and lights, to social media accounts and email inboxes.
The concept behind IFTTT (If This Then That) is simple and can be applied to just about any aspect of your life that you want to automate.
IFTTT is a free web-based service that allows users to create chains of simple conditional statements, called “recipes”, which are triggered by changes to other web services. For example, if you have an email account with Gmail and an iOS device, you can use IFTTT to have all new photos sent from the phone automatically uploaded to Google Photos. Similarly, if it rains in your area on any given day during the weekdays (Monday through Friday), then turn on your porch light using Philips Hue lights.
IFTTT’s slogan is “Put the Internet to work for you.”
The only requirements for using IFTTT is that you have an internet connection and a free account on their website or app.

This is the first recipe that I created and used to automate my lights when I first started using If This Then That (IFTTT). It allows me to turn on my lights with a voice command through Amazon Echo or Google Home devices like Google Home Mini or Amazon Echo Dot 2nd Generation by simply saying “Alexa turn on/off all lights”.
You can also use this same recipe by adding it directly into Siri Shortcuts on an iPhone running iOS 12+, which gives users access to even more features than ever before!

- If you have a lamp on your desk, and you’re not within Bluetooth range of it, turn off the lamp. The recipe will run when you leave your office or room with your phone or laptop and come back again (assuming that the device has been connected to Wi-Fi).
- If I leave my apartment at 8:00 am every weekday morning, change my thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit before I leave so that it’s comfortable when I get home after work at 6 pm. The recipe runs only when necessary–in this case when someone leaves their apartment during these hours of operation (8 am – 6 pm).
